As I didn’t have any plans, I didn’t have the right equipment ,which is, well.. no good. I needed a sinking tip and only had a floating line. I looked through my flies and found “a secret fly”, given to me by a good friend Valli. He gave me this fly to use for the Blanda river in the north which has deep pools, and it was still lying there waiting in the box. Fantastic, this will do! This fly was heavier than my ass weighs on Christmas evening after eating the whole holiday cookies from Santa. Perfect.
Where to start… I was going to Blanda beat 1 in Iceland for the salmon fishing opening 5-7th June last. The opening started at 7am but I could not be there until for the second half at 16.00. I knew how many salmon had gone up the ladder earlier so this was headed for an adventure. Even so nothing could prepare me for the news I got that morning. My father called me at 9am to tell me they had already caught 18 salmon on the first two hours on 4 rods!?!
I grew up fishing with my family and some of my most memorable moments throughout the years have been on fishing holidays with them. It is precious to have a hobby like fishing that you can share with your loved ones, but when it comes to fishing… all is fair in love and war and our family is no different. Even though we enjoy fishing together we prank and cheat each other like mad people when it comes to fishing. Especially me and dad.
Iceland is known over the world as the mecca for salmon fishing and is a place where many anglers dream of going fly fishing. I have often had questions about fishing in Iceland and have run into the misunderstanding that all fishing in Iceland is so pricey that it is not for everyone´s wallet.
Iceland is, for a good reason, the dream destination for fly fishing with endless rivers and possibilities for fishing with exclusive access in beautiful surroundings. In today´s world, it is precious to get time away from the stress and experience raw nature.
I have been organizing trips to Iceland with our family business for a long time, different kind of trips fishing and would like to share some of my thoughts and advise on fishing on a budget in Iceland.
I was lucky to visit Mexico to go fishing for the first time this November with some of the Angling iQ crew. We arrived to Cancun via New York and were picked up and taken to the Punta Allen Fishing Club directly. Punta Allen is known for being the “Permit City” of the world…. Yes, you can probably think how I decided I would pick up a permit or two on Day One. Well, aim for the sky and all that.
I have been fishing ever since I can remember and I have been blessed meeting a lot of great people through fishing and hearing their stories. I love being around other people and hearing about their journey and with this blog I hope to bring both mine and other anglers stories to life. Not stories about who caught the biggest fish or how. But their memories, because sometimes fishing is not about the biggest fish but the journey behind it – the nature, the learning, mishaps and the people you meet along the way. For me that is fishing.
